EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to our first Collectors Edition, a 250 page issue filled with our favorite Fall Foliage getaways and more! In this Sunday Guides we will journey together through upstate New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, The Finger Lakes, and parts of Canada.
We are so excited to have you with us today and hope you can subscribe to our show The Paris House on Joie de Vivre TV Network based in Paris, France. It is there that you can watch our video series on this beautiful region in the world. We provide a discount by using Michele10.
We love every season of the year. However, there is something poetic about fall foliage in the Adirondacks, New England, and Canada. There is a reason people travel from around the World to visit during the Autumn months. Having grown up in Upstate New York, close to the Vermont border, was the most idyllic childhood. The scent of cider donuts, apple orchards, and hot cider perfumed the air. I can’t believe how lucky I was to be surrounded by this beauty my entire life, and it never gets old. The mild sunny days enhance the brilliant colors of the foliage, shimmering onto lakes, rivers, and ocean. Evenings are cozy, bundled up in chunky sweaters, wrapped in plaid Pendleton blankets and fall fashions on moonlit hay rides. Sitting by the outdoor fireplace, sipping hot mulled cider spiked with a little Bourbon remains one of my favorite things to do.
Our Paris House boutique section is curated with our favorite cozy stylish fall fashion, entertaining and beauty items that we love. From seasonal recipes, autumn sangria, our favorite books, and more, we are enjoying every moment of this glorious season together with you!

Upstate New York and the Adirondacks: The Sagamore
Let’s begin with upstate New York in the Adirondack mountain region. I grew up about 45 minutes from Lake George and Bolton Landing. In this area, one of the most popular places to stay is The Sagamore Resort, a luxurious destination which originally opened in 1883. It is spectacular and situated on the private Green Island that you access by a little bridge. The Resort is named after a Native American character in the James Fenimore Cooper novel, The Last of the Mohicans. This stay boasts beautiful mountain views, several restaurants, golf course and spa, along with outdoor and indoor pools and waterfront dining. They have their own boat for a relaxing ride on the lake, including a sunset cruise. There are additional boats such as the Minnie-Ha-Ha down the road a bit in the village of Lake George. The Sagamore has beautiful views of the lake surrounded by the world renowned Adirondack mountains. No matter the time of day, you’ll be able to capture memories sitting lakeside in quintessential Adirondack chairs. It is beyond gorgeous year round but in my opinion, breathtaking in the fall. In this area you will find a little village where you can go shopping. You can also continue down into the Lake George area. If you have children and they want a little bit more excitement, that is the place to go for ice cream, beaches, miniature golf, treats, arcades, and shopping.
Beautiful Bolton Landing in The Adirondacks, NY where the mountains and the lake meet
Inn at Erlowest
Another beautiful hotel nearby is the Inn at Erlowest. It is lovely with gorgeous panoramic views of the lake and onsite dining options. “Adults 21 and over can experience the luxuries of a 5-Star hotel: dignified suites with in-room jacuzzis and fireplaces, an exquisite 4-Diamond restaurant, a quaint bar, heated outdoor pool, two private beaches, and a private mahogany boat* in a magnificent Queen-Anne style turn of the century stone castle.” I highly recommend booking any trip to this region as far in advance as possible as it is very popular during fall foliage.

The Queensbury Hotel
Another gem of a hotel in the Upstate New York area is The Queensbury Hotel, founded in 1926 and located in Glens Falls. Although it does not have views of the lake, it makes up for it with its convenient location, centrally located between Saratoga Springs and Lake George. You can easily take Route 87 down to Albany to visit the state capital and tour the museum as well. It is also a close drive to Saratoga Springs for some culture and delicious food. Saratoga has the Lincoln Baths, the famous racetrack, SPAC and beautiful parks and golf courses. I highly recommend Mrs. London’s and Max London’s for lunch or dinner. There is also the Gideon Putnam hotel in Saratoga Springs. From the Queensberry Hotel you can continue on up to Lake George into the Adirondacks and work your way up to Montreal, although it might be a lot of driving it could be done in a day. However, I would recommend getting a hotel in old Montreal (more on that below). The Queensberry is not that far from Vermont and various places in New England. We love this hotel very much, it has undergone a massive restoration over the past several years and each time we go back it continues to get better and better. I hear they are planning on adding a rooftop bar and that is so exciting. It is lovely with a stunning lobby, historic period details with a fresh updated touch. Have lunch in Finnegan’s Pub and cocktails at the outdoor cafe. We love it for its beauty and great location to many regions and nearby New England states.

Dining and Shopping
While in Upstate New York, if you are a foodie and would like some of the most delicious cider donuts we recommend Fo’Castle Farm in Burnt Hills; they are in our top three favorites. There is also Lakeside Farms in Ballston Lake that has their famous “Cider Witch” who tosses candy out into a crowd of very excited children! While at Lakeside Farm or Fo’ Castle Farm, be sure to stock up on fresh apples for baking.
Vischer Ferry is also close by and has one of our favorite general stores, The Vischer Ferry General Store, owned and run by my friend Louise. She has an impeccable eye for finding the perfect gifts to fill her charming general store with. The food is so good and our favorite, the lavender coffee, is a must. These are perfect stops for the entire family to enjoy.
If you like to shop, the Lake George outlets are nearby, as well as the quaint adorable boutiques on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. For clothes we love Violets on Broadway. You can bring back some treasures for your home and some lovely outfits to wear while you’re on your adventure. Keep your eyes open for tag sales and antique sales on country drives. One of our “secret” locations is the Kings Donut Wagon, located in Cambridge NY. The maple cream and glazed donuts are things dreams are made of and are often served warm. Take the country roads from here right on up to Arlington Vermont, where you will pass by historic covered bridges with bubbling brooks and flowing rivers below. Rent a kayak or canoe, pack a picnic from the local general store and admire the foliage from the water.

Old Montreal, Canada
Now it’s off to Montreal, Canada. Pack your passport and a stylish wardrobe (Montreal has a European vibe, and people look amazing sitting outdoors drinking cocktails on a sunny fall day). Make sure to bring comfortable shoes or boots to navigate the occasional cobblestone streets in Old Montreal. We love suede boots and beautiful dresses in the fall season. As for a stay, we recommend Hotel William Gray. It is in the heart of old Montreal on Place Jacques Cartier, overlooking the Old Port and only a few minutes away from Notre Dame cathedral (which you can purchase entry tickets online in advance to avoid waiting in long lines). The hotel is a beautiful combination of old and modern design, and the service is fantastic. The convenient location and spectacular rooftop views of the city along with delicious restaurants make The Hotel William Gray the perfect luxury hotel. Walk out the door and grab a homemade waffle with maple cream and a hot mulled cider, then take a walk over to Notre Dame cathedral. There are cafes nearby and many different restaurants. We recommend getting a room at a higher level at Hotel William Gray with a large balcony overlooking the iconic ferris wheel, Old Port, and city. The night is spectacular when everything is lit up, and having breakfast on the terrace in the morning is something you will never forget. The archeological museum is nearby along with artisan markets, shops and more.

Vermont
Now let's explore Vermont. In our opinion, no fall foliage vacation will be complete without visiting Vermont; all parts of Vermont during this season will take your breath away. Please refer to Vermont tourism, Chamber of Commerce, or The Weather Channel to track the weather to see when it will be peak foliage. The rain and temperature will impact foliage, however the entire month of October is typically stunning. We go to Manchester, Dorset, Danby, Bennington, Arlington, and sometimes to Shelburne. The hotel that we stay at and recommend is The Equinox. With both an indoor and outdoor pool, a fabulous spa, shops, various restaurants and classic design and architecture, it remains the place to stay. It is situated in Manchester, which is an ideal location to stay as you venture to other parts of the state. There are fabulous restaurants in town and great shopping outlets in addition to wonderful golf courses. Another, quieter place to stay is the Dorset Inn, a quaint inn and the longest continuing operating one in Vermont. It backs up to a golf course, the food is fabulous, and Dorset is the most charming little town in Vermont. It’s the epitome of quintessential New England, with a playhouse, general store, and cute shops nearby. While The Equinox is a larger resort, The Dorset Inn is quainter and smaller. Both are very nice, but it will depend on your preference of ambience for which stay you ultimately book.
Things to do and see:
● Drive up to Mount Equinox where you can view several states, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts and Mount Royal in Montreal Canada from the top summit of 3,848 feet above sea level.
● Visit Equinox Valley Nursery for flowers and more delicious cider donuts.
● Enjoy Land Rover off road driving.
● Fly Fishing at Orvis.
● Stock up on picnic items at the adorable Dorset General Store and take a canoe ride down the Battenkill river or bring on a hike for a picnic under the glorious foliage.
● Stop by Mother Myricks for homemade candy.
● Last but not least, visit the iconic Northshire bookstore –our favorite!

Stockbridge and Lennox, Massachusetts
If you love culture and art along with beautiful mountain views, delicious food, quaint shops, patisseries, and gardens, we recommend visiting the Berkshire mountains in the Lenox, Stockbridge, Massachusetts area. You’ll find world-renowned spas and yoga retreats, such as Kripalu and Canyon Ranch, along with the historic Red Lion Inn or the Seven Hills, another nearby hotel. Sometimes if you get lucky, the Shakespeare group will do a pop-up on the front porch at the Red Lion Inn. The Widow Bingham’s Tavern, the inn’s restaurant, is not to be missed with its incredible outdoor seating, front porch dining, and a large dining room. You can shop in our favorite store in town located directly inside the Red Lion Inn- The Shop Around The Corner. The owner’s eye for detail is impeccable and you will go home with special gifts and treasures. Go into Lenox, Massachusetts for more antiquing shopping and food, drive through the mountains near the live music venue, Tanglewood. Perhaps there will still be some concerts late in the season and we definitely recommend checking it out.
We also recommend visiting Edith Wharton’s house, the Mount. Wharton was a famous writer, and her home and gardens located in Lenox at the Mount are some of my favorite gardens in the world.

Salem, Massachusetts
For some SPOOKTACULAR fun head to Salem! Visit for the Witch House and learn about the infamous trials. Dine along the ocean while enjoying delicious fresh seafood and seasonal cuisine. Parking can be challenging so we recommend reaching out to the chamber of commerce for shuttles, parking lots and lodging. We stayed at The Merchant and enjoyed it very much.

The Finger Lakes Region
(Our photo was featured on I ❤️ New York)
Staying at the Mirbeau Inn and Spa is like being immersed in one of Claude Monet’s paintings of his gardens in Giverny, France. The ambiance, food, and spa are all breathtaking.
We enjoy driving through the scenic Finger Lake region, often on our way to Canada, stopping along the way to wine taste, sight see, and shop.
If we time our adventure right, we can visit the Ithaca Farmers Market on our way. The market is filled with fresh flowers, produce, crafts, handmade jewelry, pottery, and some of the most delicious food. Our favorites are the shrimp spring rolls and the Nutella crepes topped with whipped cream and strawberries! Visit our previous blogpost here https://theparishouse.com/blog-1/canada-wine for more information on this region. Mirbeau inn and Spa is situated on the North Shore of Skaneateles, New York, a charming, small village by the beautiful Skaneateles Lake. Here you can stroll by historic homes from the 19th century, antique shops, restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques.
If you are a nature lover there is an abundance of trails, lakes, and waterfalls. We enjoy stopping by Taughannock Falls.
Mirbeau Inn and Spa
Taughannock Falls
Niagara-on-the-Lake
As we continue our journey up from the Finger Lakes, we arrive in Niagara Falls and cross over onto the Canadian side. If you have never seen the Falls, you should try to visit. It’s absolutely breathtaking from either side of the border. After a quick stop and stretch outside the car, we then continue onwards to Niagara-on-the Lake, the most charming little town on Lake Ontario.
Things we love to do there:
● Walk along King Street and Queen street
● Have dinner in town
● Sip cocktails at the Niagara-on-the-Lake golf course
● Grab an Adirondack chair and watch the beautiful sunset over the lake and fortress – it’s lovely!
The hotels we have stayed at here are The Pillar and Post and Queens Landing. The pool area at Pillar and Post is great for families, and the dining patio on the water at Queens landing is beautiful.
Beautiful scenery in Canada
Sleepy Hollow, New York
The foliage is beautiful and the town goes all out for Halloween.
Dine along the water with views of the Tappanzee Bridge! Retrace the steps of Washington Irving’s Headless Horseman in the historic cemetery. Visit Lyndhurst Mansion in nearby Tarrytown and enjoy the Gilded Age architecture.

The Coin
I couldn’t put this book down, as Off-The-Rails as it is. There are many funny moments delivered with a dry sense of humor. The narrator is completely and unapologetically unhinged. She’s struggling to keep her head above water and we learn why with each sentence Zaher writes.
Dinner For Two
Amor Towles
I recently started reading Dinner For Two and am enjoying the short stories. Although as of now I’m not as fully enthralled as I was with Rules of Civility (a favorite of mine). However, I am pretty sure Eve, the character from Rules of Civility, makes an appearance in the novella part of this book- so in the end perhaps this will be my favorite book of Amor Towels?!!! Either way it is very good. Towle’s prose is sophisticated, his writing is unique and crafted with razor sharp precision.

Binge Watch
I’ll be the first to admit, I rarely watch “TV” so it takes me a long time to catch up with what “everyone” else has already seemingly watched. To the best of my knowledge I have never watched a reality TV show, a housewives or anything of that genre. I do however on occasion like to escape into a quality binge watching adventure. It took me nearly 3 months to complete season two of House of Dragons. I'm still watching Bridgerton and have only seen one episode of season 4, Emily in Paris. I prefer to read and with my work and travel schedule there isn't enough time. As I write this I am currently obsessed with Nobody Wants This.
The Perfect Couple
To be honest I watched this only for the set design, gorgeous interiors, ocean views on Newport Rhode Island and of course Nicole Kidman. It was fun to see how the filthy rich live and ultimately self-destruct.
Nobody Wants This
Above I mentioned how I am too busy for TV and that is still very true. However- I put everything aside, including Sunday Guides and my French lessons as I could not stop watching this rom com! This is how a couple should behave, no drama, no games, a lot of communication and great chemistry. I’ll leave it at that as to not spoil anything! It’s so much fun!!!
