Summers in Newport Rhode Island evoke memories of the years gone by Gilded Age. From the mansions often referred to as “cottages” along the famed Cliff Walk, to the charming Bowen’s Wharf, it is filled with beautiful historic moments. The quintessential lobster rolls are plentiful, and we listed our favorites in this issue. What sets Newport apart from other iconic New England locations is its opulent mansions, complete with marble, ornate moldings, and enough gold to gild more than a few lilies! There is an array of hotel options, with stunning architecture and scenic views at every turn. Newport has that old world quintessential style, a European exuberance mixed with classic preppy New England style. In this issue, we travel through time into the Gilded Age to the Breakers Mansion on Cliff Walk. You must see it in person to believe it. We dined at four restaurants while on our getaway, varying from a quick coffee and pastry breakfast spot overlooking the bay, off-the-beaten-path lobster rolls, and the most scenic and tasty places to eat in town.

Visiting an area this beautiful calls for elevated fashion looks without sacrificing comfort, sun-kissed skin, pretty lipgloss, and a spritz of a favorite summer fragrance. We include our “Out And About With Paris House” feature in each issue for other points of interest. Through appointment only, we custom design flowers, fashion photoshoots, and events for our clients. We style around the world in addition to our two locations: our idyllic countryside gardens and our urban studio located only 20 minutes outside New York City. Our favorite recipes are also is this month’s issue! When it’s too hot to cook, get grilling with our grilled shrimp brushed in a homemade pesto. We have it all here in this beautiful Sunday Guides.

History

Newport was founded in 1639 as a port city in the North American British Colonies. During the Revolutionary War, the city experienced a decline in economic wealth. As the mid 1800s approached, Newport regained its status and became a fashionable oceanside resort.

The Gilded Ages of the later part of the 19th century gave this glittery location wide recognition, however not everyone loved the abundance of new money.

Old money was not impressed with this ostentatious display of wealth. The most famous of this location’s new stays, The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff and The Elms were the epitome of The Gilded Age. They showcased the exorbitant financial success of its owners: the heads of railroad transportation, finance, and industry, with the Vanderbilts being among the most famous.

The stunning sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean seen by the mansions from Cliff Walk bring thousands of visitors from around the world.

The Gilded Age came to a rapid decline in the 1900s. The Great Depression, World War I and the implementation of Federal Income tax made it exceedingly difficult for the owners to afford the upkeep of the mansions and surrounding area. However, The Preservation Society began raising money in 1941-1945 and found ways to bring this Gilded Age back to life for current day tourists and residents to enjoy.

Through providing tours, grants, and partnering with The Breakers, The Preservation Society was able to restore the iconic mansions to their former glory. Most notably Countess Széchenyi of The Breakers. The Gilded Age series on Max features many of the interiors, and offers a great way to feel immersed in the Gilded Age and learn more about Newport.

Springline Coffee

Start your morning off right at a delightful petit cafe at Bannisters Wharf. Enjoy sipping delicious coffee, latte, cappuccino, tea, juices, and savoring freshly baked goods, sandwiches, snacks and more. Grab a table outside and relax with a beautiful view of the bay.

Dining - The Mooring Restaurant

Located in Bowman’s Wharf is the place to go for delicious seafood in Newport, so we recommend getting a reservation. It boasts a perfect location, complete with pretty views and mouth-watering fresh seafood caught in the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. We ordered the warm butter lobster rolls and crab lobster fritters in a maple aioli along with local ice-cold beer. It was a great way to kick off the summer.

Food notes and recommendations:

We loved the warm butter lobster rolls topped with crispy onion rings. We also enjoyed the lobster fritters, a New England staple. The addition of maple syrup in the aioli was an unexpected culinary innovation, paying homage to New England.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk

When it comes to classic luxury, the Chanler is it! This majestic yet intimate hotel boasts magnificent ocean views, a great lawn complete with striped cabana tents surrounded with their very own gardens. The Chanler offers wine events and indoor and outdoor dining, with a beautiful bar to complete the ambience.

Crab Risotto

For all its exuberant luxury, we felt at home. The gracious staff is warm and welcoming, and happy to offer sightseeing suggestions and facts about the history of Newport.

Dining at Chanler

In addition to the restaurants, enjoy their seasonal wine garden, Ca' del Bosco Wine Garden. “Experience the essence of Italy this summer at the Ca' del Bosco Wine Garden, where the tantalizing scent of authentic Italian pizza mingles with the fragrance of blooming flowers. Relax in Adirondack chairs beneath the dappled shade of umbrellas, sip on Franciacorta wine and Italian Spritzers, and let yourself be whisked away to the picturesque Amalfi Coast for the afternoon.”

Newport Lobster Shack

Belle's Cafe at Newport Shipyard, Lunch at Belle’s - Best Lobster Rolls

Everything was delicious in Newport, but we will give the coveted Best Lobster Roll Award to Belle’s Cafe at Newport Shipyard. Tucked away with a view of the famous bridge, Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge.

Its casual, relaxing vibe was just what we wanted. To us, the incredible freshness and unique flavors earned this spot worthy of such an award.

If you’re interested in breakfast, they offer delectable options as well. Please be aware that they stop seating at 2:45. Hours are 7:30am-3pm.

As self proclaimed lobster roll aficionados who travel through New England, we were not only on the pursuit of happiness and tranquility, but also on an exploration for the world’s best lobster rolls. Belles was recommended to us by our trolley tour guide. It’s close to the trolley pick up location, and easily walkable from the Wharf. Serving only breakfast and lunch, Belle’s lovely peaceful outdoor area with views on the water was everything our guide said: the best lobster rolls in Newport and easily in our top favorites in New England. Their lemonade and potato chips were the perfect accompaniment.

Wharf: Bowen's Wharf

This charming wharf has been perfectly located in town on the Waterfront by Newport’s Historic Hill since the 17th century.

Its quaint brick buildings and cobblestone streets are filled with restaurants and coffee shops with views of the water.

After its independence from the British, the Gilded Age until present, Bowen’s Wharf has been an important part of the city.

Shop, dine on mouthwatering seafood, grab a cappuccino on the dock, and immerse yourself in some of New England’s finest examples of history.

Hotels

The Chanler at Cliff Walk

There are many hotels to choose from. The Chanler at Cliff Walk is a stunning property, you can drive to Ocean House or Castle Hill for other luxury properties.

Hotel Viking

We have stayed at various places, and this time we chose Hotel Viking which we love for its location and pricing.

At nearly 100 years old, Hotel Viking is located atop Newport’s Historic Hill. It is only minutes by car and walking to many of the most visited spots in Newport. We enjoyed the easy valet parking, vibrant bar-lobby area, coffee shop and the knowledgeable friendly staff. Fun fact: behind the front desk are the original key boxes that remain after nearly a century.

Newport Gilded Age Mansions Trolley Tour with Breakers Admission

If you are looking for an affordable, fun, and informative tour of the mansions along Cliff Walk. then this tour is for you. At around $46.00 per person, you get a highly knowledgeable guide, stunning sights, and a comfortable trolley ride.

Our guide, Rob, exceeded our expectations with a beautiful drive around town and the ocean, pointing out many places of interest along the way with history and fun facts. We stopped in front of several homes and spent 90 minutes at the Breakers doing a self-guided tour. This affordable option stands out as a must. There are audio devices available as well. We booked our tour on Viator Tours.

The Breakers

The most opulent and famous of all the “cottages” along Cliff Walk is The Breakers.

Built by Cornelius Vanderbilt from 1893-1895, the property is situated on 13 acres with views of the ocean.

You must see to believe the mansion’s open-air courtyard and great hall with 50-foot ceilings, baccarat crystal chandeliers.

Cornelius and Alice Vanderbilt passed ownership to their daughter Countess Széchenyi later on. In 1948 she allowed the Preservation Society of Newport to offer tours of the first floor.

In return, they agreed to pay $1 per year and pay for all expenses to maintain the mansion.

For more than 125 years The Breakers has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly including many presidents, royalty, and international guests.

Cliff Walk

Cliff Walk is a stunning 3-1/2 mile walk each way with expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and the mansions. We recommend visiting the Chanler Hotel while there.

Most of the walk is paved but some parts are rocky and comfortable shoes are a must.

To walk the entire way back and forth will take about 2-3 hours, so you may wish to break this up into two days to see it all since the views are stunning each step of the way.

Start at Chanler or at 40 Steps on Narraganset Avenue, head south for magnificent views of the Breakers. There are several options for a beautiful journey along the famous Cliff Walk.

Tennis Hall of Fame

The Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum are located in the Newport Casino. The Casino was built in 1879-1881 where the Newport elite enjoyed this exclusive social club. It is the home of America’s first lawn tennis as well as Newport’s first jazz festival.

As the Great Depression caused financial hardships and many mansions and important properties struggled and fell into disrepair, the Casino’s heyday of an elite social club struggled. By the 1950s the shift to the Tennis Hall of Fame rejuvenated this historic property gaining international recognition and prestige in the world of tennis.

“It stands today as one of the finest examples of Victorian Shingle Style Architecture in the world.” Sourced Wikipedia

Shopping in Newport:

Anchor Taffy Shop in Bowen’s Wharf

Kiel James Patrick Flagship Store. The Kiel James Patrick flagship store is located in Bowen’s Wharf, and it is everything you would expect it to be when it comes to New England clothing. Outside the beautifully curated shop were dozens of potted blue hydrangea, with lawn games and seating. What could be more New England than that? Once you enter the store you are surrounded by colorful preppy yet tailored outfits and the cutest kids clothing too.

Primavera Home for souvenirs

Gap Store for staples that you may have forgotten to pack. We found adorable dresses and casual menswear at great prices, which helped fill in with a few items we left at home!
